OFFSHORE WIND FARMS
We have worked on all of the offshore wind farms listed below,
including baseline survey, ornithological assessment (including
for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects), Habitats
Regulations Assessment, construction phase surveys and
post-construction monitoring.
ONSHORE WIND FARMS
With experience on over 300 onshore wind projects, there
are too many to list individually here but projects that we
have worked on that have been successfully constructed and
now operational include:

ECOLOGICAL SURVEY CAPABILITY
We are able to deliver a full range of ecological surveys, including
all of the following. We have a UK-wide network of over 25
specialist surveyors that we work with.
Advice on Site Selection
From our extensive experience of ecological
issues in development, we can provide
initial advice for projects to identify likely
ecological issues that could be raised and
how those might be managed.
Advice on Ecological Mitigation
Many of our projects have required
ecological mitigation measures to be
designed and implemented, so we can
advise on reducing ecological effects,
avoiding significant impacts, and delivering
no net nature conservation loss.
Ecological Impact Assessment
We are one of the most experienced
ecological consultancies in the UK in the
assessment of renewable energy projects
and have produced over 150 ecological
assessments for Environmental
Statements.
Survey Planning and Design
We can provide advice on survey
requirements including detailed methods
and timescales, using current guidance
from nature conservation agencies and our
‘on-the-ground’ experience.
Survey Implementation
We have an extensive survey team available
to undertake a full range of ecological
surveys. Further details on our survey
capability are given here.
Post-construction Monitoring
We are one of the most experienced
ecological consultancies in the UK
undertaking post-construction monitoring
projects across the country, including
onshore and offshore wind farms, port
developments and landfill sites.
Specialist Ecological Services
We provide a range of further detailed
specialist ecological services, including
Collision Risk Modelling and Population
Modelling (Population Viability Analysis and
Potential Biological Removal modelling).
NSIPs
We have experience in a range of Nationally
Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) in
the UK, including the Kentish Flats Offshore
Wind Farm Extension, North Blyth Biomass
Project, Able Marine Energy Park and
Rampion Offshore wind farm.
Advice during Construction
Developments often need expert ecological
advice during construction and we’ve advised
on many such works, acting as Ecological
Clerk of Works. These include breeding birds
protected under Schedule 1 of the 1981
Wildlife and Countryside Act and European
protected species and habitats.
Ecological Risk Assessment
We can provide detailed advice on the
ecological risks that a development may be
likely to face and how those risks might be
managed.
Expert witness at Public Inquiry
Dr Percival has acted as an expert ecological witness at 30 public
inquiries to date since his first in 1994 (appearing for English
Nature at the Budle Bay inquiry). These have included Islay (1996
and 1998), Largie (1996), Helmsdale (1997), Out Newton (1999),
Nant Carfan (2001), Tir Mostyn (2001), Little Cheyne Court (2004),
Knockacummer (2005), Bradwell (2007 and 2009), Middlemoor
(2007), Green Rigg (2008), Kelburn (2008), Stacain (2008 and
2010), Montreathmont Moor (2009), Hellrigg (2009), Stroupster
(2009), Spaldington Airfield (2011), Langham (2011), Kilchattan
(2011), Jack’s Lane (2012), Beck Burn (2012), Saxby Wolds (2013),
Bryn Llywelyn (2013), Llanbrynmair (2013), Molesworth (2013)
and River Valley (2014) proposed wind farms.
OUR SERVICES
Our aim at Ecology Consulting is to provide the full range
of ecological services, including: advice on initial
development site searches; survey planning and design;
ecological risk assessment; full ecological impact
assessment; post-submission ecological expert support
(including a public inquiry); advice through construction
and post-construction monitoring.
OUR EXPERIENCE
We work together as an ecological consultancy, specialising
in bird conservation management, ornithological and other
ecological survey and assessments. So far, we’ve
completed surveys, advisory and assessment work for over
350 wind farm projects across the UK, Ireland, Sweden,
Poland, Bulgaria, Canada, Mongolia, South Africa, Sri
Lanka, Australia and New Zealand and have worked with
many UK nationally significant infrastructure projects,
including the Kentish Flats offshore wind farm Extension,
North Blyth Biomass Project, Able Marine Energy Park and
Rampion Offshore wind farm (all of which have received
consent). We have experience of a wide range of
developments, including wind energy, biomass power
stations, port developments and landfill sites. We also have
extensive experience of Habitats Regulations Assessment,
with over 30 completed.
